In late November, the Center brought a suit challenging the Federal Government’s decision to lease almost 1.3 million acres of California’s Outer Continental Shelf Lands for oil exploration.

The scheduled lease sale, the first action under former President Nixon’s accelerated leasing program, represented a commitment to major oil development along the California coast. Property rights to the oil and gas would be vested with successful bidders for the next 40-60 years.
