Moving Forward

After graduating from Stanford Law School in 1978, Sobeck joined CLIPI as a fellow, where she worked on environmental and natural resources cases. Notably, she played a role in the Century Freeway litigation.

Following her time at CLIPI, Sobeck embarked on a distinguished career in public service. She served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, overseeing the Wildlife and Marine Resources Section. Later, she became the Assistant Administrator for the National Marine Fisheries Service at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) . In 2018, she was appointed Executive Director of the California State Water Resources Control Board, a position she held until her retirement in 2023.
